Living in Würzburg means vineyards behind your house, a five minute drive to get out of town even from downtown, a short commute to work because everything is close by, no shortage of lovely wine festivals, cute and quaint streets and boutiques for shopping, and to top it all off: the weather usually cooperates with your plans. That’s what it is like to live in Würzburg. How lucky is that!
These three are often at play in town. Not surprisingly considering you are in the middle of a world-class winegrowing area, the city has a large university, and there are many festivals, such as the Mozartfest, the Africa-Festival, and the International Film Weekend.
Swimming in the Main River is no problem at all. The water quality is good and the water warms up nicely in the summer. You can find beautiful sunbathing areas at the Zellerau and the Sanderau where small stairs lead down to the water. If you prefer to look at the river rather than swim in it, then the lounge chairs near the Löwenbrücke Bridge just outside of town are right for you.
Würzburg is a real city really close to vineyards. Würzburg’s terroirs are world-renowned: From the “Innere Leiste” to the “Würzburger Stein” – all in all, there are seven of them.
From x-rays to blood types to the discovery of cancer-causing viruses – fourteen Würzburg University professors have received Nobel Prizes between 1909 and 2008 for their outstanding research and discoveries.
There is no shortage of parks and recreation areas: There is the 32 hectare Ringpark, the 12 hectare Hofgarten surrounding the Residenz Castle and, including the city forest, you have about 1600 hectares of greenspace.
For college students, there are Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften FHWS Würzburg-Schweinfurt, Hochschule für Musik, and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. The university is considered a top college in Germany and enjoys a great international reputation in medicine, psychology, biology, physics and chemistry. The FHWS has ten departments, more than 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, plus six research institutions. This adds up to a broad spectrum of practice-oriented college learning.
Würzburg has a workforce of 110,000 people. The current unemployment rate is 4.3 percent.

The city is distinguished by an organic cadre of creative service industries as well as middle-class manufacturing companies, some of which are highly specialized. The key industries, besides retail outlets, are medical and healthcare industries, creative industries and media. In short: It’s quite a mix!
